OVERVIEW

The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) seeks an experienced, mission-driven, collaborative and connected leader for an executive director role. Candidates must be passionate about the issues and values championed by ASBN and qualified to guide the organization as it works to attract members and to partner with business organizations, investors and companies to advocate for solutions and policies that support a just transition to an equitable, sustainable and regenerative economy that benefits all –– people and planet. A seasoned nonprofit executive, the successful candidate will serve as a coach, guide and partner in managing the organization and navigating the cross-sector impact work led by an expert team of staff and consultants with support from like-minded members, nonprofit partners, donors and foundations.

ABOUT ASBN

The American Sustainable Business Network –– including ASBI a 501 c(3) and ASBC a 501c(4) –– partners with business organizations, investors, and companies to advocate for solutions and policies that support an equitable transition to a just, sustainable and regenerative stakeholder-driven economy. Its network represents more than 200,000 businesses across a wide range of industries and geographies. The two entities work together to grow membership and engagement, attract grants and funding for high-impact projects, and lead and support key policy initiatives that reflect the organization’s mission and core values.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Executive Director serves as the face of ASBN, working in concert with the ASB Boards and an experienced staff and contractor team to build relationships with key allies and potential contributors, lead strategically, and manage a complex array of grants and funding models. Members include business organizations, companies, other like-minded networks and investors. The team engages with stakeholders who share value alignment and a common agenda.

The Executive Director is accountable for overseeing operations, capacity building and programs. Key programmatic areas include performance management and culture building with an eye towards diversity, equity and inclusion, financial and grant management, membership acquisition and retention, communications, public policy and strategy.

This position is part-time to start, with an annual salary commensurate with experience. The candidate will report to the ASBN Board of Directors. ASBN currently has nine full-time employees, as well as multiple contractors and consultants.

The successful candidate will serve as a coach, guide and partner in navigating the major impact work being led by a passionate and expert team of staff and consultants, with support from like-minded members, donors and foundations. Special expertise in fostering partnerships and relationships is highly desirable.

Location: This position is fully remote.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy and Governance

  • Develop principal-level relationships with key partners and stakeholders
  • Oversee and implement strategic planning in concert with the board
  • Set key short and long-term priorities and objectives for the organization and translate those to operational goals

Alliance Building and Membership Outreach

  • Manage strategic relationships in partnership with the President/Co-Founder to develop additional funding opportunities and alliances
  • Cultivate new members and refine membership support
  • Participate in fundraising efforts in partnership with the President/Co-Founder as well as with high-net-worth donors, cultivate donations and sponsorships with business members

Finance, Technology, HR & Legal

  • Strong financial oversight and management, ensuring appropriate systems are in place and monitored
  • Knowledge of grant management, support of project management to oversee strong grant portfolio
  • Oversee HR and benefits team, knowledge of compliance to mitigate risk
  • Ensure consistent financial reporting to staff and board–monthly financials, annual budget and audit management
  • Oversee technology leadership to ensure implementation of website modernization goals, IT solutions and security protocols as needed

Membership, Communications, & Events

  • Oversee membership and stakeholder recruitment and engagement, including annual communications planning
  • Work closely with staff team and stakeholders to develop new programs and member benefits
  • Participate as needed in media interviews, speeches, podcasts, and press briefings and oversee the development of thought leadership articles
  • Maintain the public profile of the organization with key stakeholders
  • Be a spokesperson and thought leader, cultivating opportunities to promote ASBN

General Staff and Board Management

  • Provide inclusive and equitable leadership, building a culture of trust and removing silos
  • Oversee and implement a performance management strategy for all staff that includes regular reporting on goals and objectives
  • Oversee the portfolio of work that falls under the President’s responsibilities, and ensure the integration of priorities
  • Develop the agenda & related documents and facilitate quarterly Board of Director meetings and monthly Executive Committee meetings

THE CANDIDATE:

Desired skills and capabilities:

  • Knowledge of and credibility in the world of socially responsible business
  • A seasoned nonprofit executive with successful senior-level experience managing an organization (strategy, human resources, finances, systems/infrastructure, programs, grants, policy, )
  • Strategic thinker who can make decisions with an understanding of how they impact the big picture
  • Team builder who is an expert in coaching staff to performance
  • Strong fiscal management oversight, grant management and budgeting
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with external stakeholders and funders
  • Knowledge of public policy; familiarity with the policy and advocacy landscape for socially responsible business and ASBN issues preferred
  • Experience in creating diverse, equitable, and inclusive workspaces in which staff from all backgrounds and identities experience a sense of belonging and support
