The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) and a coalition of 192 sustainable businesses and advocates are proposing legislation to shift federal procurement toward safer alternatives to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as “forever chemicals.”
The federal government, as the world’s largest purchaser of goods and services—spending over $600 billion annually—has the power to drive market demand for PFAS-free products. Steering procurement away from PFAS-containing products would encourage innovation and support companies already producing safer alternatives. PFAS chemicals persist in the environment indefinitely and pose significant risks to human health, even at very low exposure levels.
“The power of federal procurement will help end the cycle of PFAS contamination of the environment. It’s a common-sense, non-regulatory approach to encourage alternatives. Business has and can continue to provide PFAS-free alternatives,” said David Levine, President of ASBN.
While President Biden’s Executive Order 14057 directs federal agencies to prioritize the procurement of PFAS-free substitutes, bureaucratic hurdles have delayed implementation. The proposed legislation would accelerate this process, ensuring faster adoption of safer products.
ASBN urges Congress to adopt this proposal, supporting proactive businesses that have already developed PFAS-free alternatives, safeguarding businesses and communities reliant on clean water, and fostering a sustainable, circular economy.
