April 15, 2024 – Washington, DC – The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) applauds the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) for their recent announcement to phase out PFAS “forever chemicals” in more than 1,500 U.S. government-owned buildings. This multiyear transition aligns with the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to tackling PFAS contamination and promoting safer, sustainable products.
As the largest single buyer of goods and services in the world, the federal government’s decision to remove intentionally-added PFAS from its $400 million per year custodial services contracts is a significant step toward protecting workers, families, and the environment.
“Many responsible businesses have already taken proactive steps to eliminate PFAS from their products,” said David Levine, ASBN co-founder and president. “This initiative not only rewards innovation but also supports companies that have committed to safer alternatives.”
“This simple shift in federal procurement requirements can have massive positive consequences for workers and their families,” said Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, President & CEO of ECOS, an ASBN member. “PFAS are known carcinogens and have no place in sustainable products. ECOS has long been committed to PFAS-free solutions, and we celebrate this federal action as a major win for worker rights, public health, and a more sustainable future.”
