ASBN Denounces Proposed Elimination of the Economic Development Administration
Washington, D.C.–The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN) strongly opposes any legislative action to eliminate or weaken the Economic Development Administration (EDA). As a voice for the business community, ASBN continually advocates for the best interests of American businesses. The EDA is a critical partner for American businesses committed to building a prosperous economy, and there is currently no existing, planned, or proposed replacement for the critical programs under the EDA. The EDA is the only federal agency that has the sole mission of economic development, creating jobs and fostering growth in areas that need it most, and has evolved over its longstanding history to meet the current needs of rural and urban communities across the country.
Eliminating the EDA would be a profound mistake. This agency is a key driver of the innovative and resilient economy of the 21st century, making strategic investments in generationally responsible companies, industries, and manufacturing. The EDA’s work fosters durable regional economies and ensures the United States remains competitive globally. The EDA focuses on job creation, which is a key component of stable infrastructure and economic growth that allows the United States to be competitive in global markets.
“A strong and sustainable economy requires a forward-thinking and regionally appropriate approach, a role that the EDA is uniquely positioned to fill,” says David Levine, ASBN Co-Founder and President. “The investments made into American business and local economies by the EDA are a critical foundation to growth and resilience for bipartisan regions across the United States.”
Rather than dismantling this vital agency, we urge Congress to recognize its role in creating long-term stability and value for our economy. We must strengthen, not eliminate, the EDA to continue its crucial work in building a stronger, more sustainable, and more competitive United States.
