ASBN Statement on Midterm Elections and the Rule of Law
Ahead of the November 2026 midterms, the boards of directors and executive leadership of the American Sustainable Business Institute (ASBI) and the American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) set out five commitments to our network
With our members and state affiliates, our network collectively represents 200,000+ businesses, and they are asking what ASBN is doing as pressure on elections intensifies. In the open letter below, the boards of directors and executive leadership of the American Sustainable Business Institute (ASBI) and the American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) answer with five commitments for the 30 to 90 days ahead and into 2027.
October 21, 2026
To our members, state affiliates, and partners:
On behalf of the Boards of Directors and Executive Leadership of the American Sustainable Business Institute (ASBI) and the American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC), guiding affiliates of the American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN), we are reaching out in direct response to the pressing questions we are receiving across our network regarding election integrity.
When our network was founded nearly twenty years ago, our mandate was clear: to build the undeniable business case for a just, equitable, and sustainable economy. In past election cycles, our role centered on advancing key state and federal election policies as well as uplifting dedicated democracy partners whose primary mission was fostering civic participation. Today, the landscape demands more of us. The rhetoric, pressures, and actions confronting democratic institutions have escalated significantly. We have stood alongside trusted allies as vital civic initiatives were defunded and longtime organizations were forced to close their doors.
Throughout these challenges, ASBN has remained resolute. We advocate for the businesses that represent the very best of what America can be, guided by the foundational truth that silence in the face of democratic erosion only allows injustice to take root. A stable, predictable economy cannot exist without a functioning democracy and the rule of law.
Over recent months, our leadership has intentionally and strategically coordinated with frontline election monitors, legal experts, and state and national coalitions safeguarding democratic processes. Through our Businesses United in Leading Democracy (BUILD) program and targeted advocacy initiatives, we are ensuring that the business perspective—your perspective—remains a visible, respected force protecting the integrity of our elections.
The rule of law is not an abstract concept; it is essential infrastructure for our businesses, our markets, and our communities. If you observe challenges or irregularities in your state or sector that require wider attention, we encourage you to alert our team so we can coordinate action across our broader network.
In the critical 30 to 90 days ahead, and as we look toward 2027 and beyond, ASBN makes the following commitments:
- Unwavering Continuity: Regardless of election outcomes or political shifts, ASBN’s mission and advocacy on your behalf will not waver or retreat.
- Signal Over Noise: We will deliver thoroughly vetted, fact-based intelligence and legal updates, sparing your team reactionary media panic.
- Collective Safety and Voice: We will ensure that no business stands alone when upholding democratic norms, offering the full strength and protective scale of our national network.
- Actionable, Practical Tools: Every critical update will be paired with turn-key tools to help you lead, support your workforce, and participate without derailing daily operations.
- Principled Stewardship: Our advocacy will remain strictly anchored in the rule of law, market predictability, nonpartisan integrity, and transparent governance across our 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities.
Together, we will navigate the weeks ahead and continue building the resilient economic future our country deserves.
In shared purpose,
The Boards of Directors & Executive Leadership
American Sustainable Business Institute (ASBI)
American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC)
