Business Leaders Applaud Pause on Dangerous Liquefied Natural Gas Projects

January 31, 2024 – The American Sustainable Business Network (ASBN), representing thousands of business owners and investors, applauds the Biden-Harris administration’s decision to pause new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) export projects. The administration cited concerns over greenhouse gas emissions and the health risks posed to frontline communities by LNG export facilities.

“The pause on new LNG exports is a major step forward in addressing the climate crisis and accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels toward a clean energy future,” said Michael Green, ASBN Climate and Energy Chair.

LNG is natural gas cooled to -260°F for transport and storage. New LNG exports would require additional fossil fuel infrastructure, including pipelines and fuel ports, which would increase pollution and pose serious risks to nearby communities. LNG pipelines and terminals release harmful pollutants such as volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, and benzene, threatening public health and environmental safety.

Green emphasized that ASBN supports a rapid transition away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy solutions. “Pausing LNG projects is an important first step,” he said. “But the U.S. must also invest in renewable energy, weatherization, energy efficiency measures, and distributed energy systems to build a climate-resilient, equitable, and thriving local economy.”
