Turning Up The Heat: An Economic and Business Discussion calling for Urgent Climate Action by U.S. Financial Regulators

ASBC and SVC invite you to join us Tuesday, April 13 at 2pm ET Turning up the Heat on Corporate Impact Reporting with Steven Rothstein (Ceres), Veena Ramani (Ceres), and Carolyn Pincus (American Sustainable Business Council).

A conversation about a new report Ceres is publishing April 13th on the continued imperative to drive for mandatory standardized ESG disclosure, specifically targeting the SEC to take action. Though this push is focused on mandates for large and mid-size companies, Ceres, ASBC and SVC want to dedicate part of the conversation to how this mandatory standardized disclosure and standardized reporting methods will filter through to investor communities, consumers and small to mid-size businesses. And additionally, how this push for ESG standardization supports and/or runs adjacent to the push for true-cost accounting methods and broader advocacy for total impact transparency.

Pesticides, Cancer Prevention & Business Solutions

In recognition of National Cancer Prevention Month, join ASBC and the Childhood Cancer Prevention Initiative for a special webinar on the importance of protecting our environment and communities from toxic pesticides and lifting up the solutions already within our reach.

Toxic chemicals in the environment and the places where children live, learn and play are also important risk factors for cancer. Toxic pesticides have a significant impact and have been clearly linked as a carcinogen. Communities of color and low-income communities are at high risk of being exposed to toxic chemicals. Moving away from toxic substances toward safer chemicals and products will drive innovation and job creation while also making workplaces and communities safer.

It is time to take action to protect our vulnerable communities from exposure to toxic chemicals and pesticides and move forward with solutions from regenerative agriculture to utilization of non-toxic plant-based products.

Join a distinguished panel for this important conversation, Wednesday, February 24 at 3 PM ET, on how business and policymakers can take action on shifting towards safer chemicals and reducing exposure to toxic chemicals.

Deep Dive: Green Infrastructure

Green infrastructure is an interconnected network of natural areas and other open spaces that conserve natural ecosystem values and functions, sustain clean air and water and provide a wide array of benefits to people and wildlife. Business Case for H2O Infrastructure Webinar w/special guest Senator Reed (D- RI)

What’s the business case for investing in our deteriorated water infrastructure now? Past generations’ investment in U.S. municipal water systems have given us reliable, plentiful clean drinking water and sanitary waste disposal. But across the country, much of our infrastructure for managing wastewater and providing drinking water is inadequate, obsolete or seriously deteriorated. Despite our growing need, federal per capita spending on water infrastructure has dropped from $76 per person in 1977 to just $11 per person in 2014! Continued failure to address this major, essential infrastructure problem is increasingly detrimental to our economy and businesses nationwide.

The US is currently projected to lose $732 billion in business sales by 2029 and over $4.5 trillion by 2039; with 636,000 jobs lost each year by 2039, just from service disruptions and increasing services rates! These losses don’t even include the damage failing water infrastructure poses to the US economy through hazardous pollution and destructive flooding.

The business case for investing in our water infrastructure now – not someday – is clear. The return will be significant job creation, a better competitive position for U.S. businesses, and resilient economic growth.

Learn more: Join ASBC, Environment America, Susan Harris of Cerulean, LLC and Senator Jack Reed (D – Rhode Island) on November 19 for a special webinar on how failing water infrastructure endangers our businesses and the economy and how we can fix this problem before the cost is insurmountable. Government listens to business, so learn the facts!

ASBC’s Race and Equity Working Group Meeting: Undesigning Structural Racism

Redlining designed structural racism into cities like Trenton, NJ. The legacy of racist policy is still felt in inequities in housing, wealth, education, health and the built environment. But without a broad understanding of how we got here, these same outcomes fuel perceptions that serve to reproduce inequity.

Breaking this cycle has required demystifying this history and bringing the tools of design, engagement and popular education to bear. designing the We has been engaged in this work on the ground in Trenton neighborhoods and with key stakeholders at all levels. How can a deeply participatory process open the door to re-framing, re-designing and re-investing in a future of shared prosperity?

This forum will be hosted by MaryAnne Howland, Chair of ASBC’s Race & Equity Working Group and Braden Crooks, co-founder of designing the We.

Braden Crooks is a founding partner at Designing the We, a social impact design studio operating in community-driven social and economic development. The dtW team designs programs, policies and enterprises that grow local communities and global networks dealing with deep crises, from the history of Redlining to the future of work.
