Unprecedented financial commitments were made in the Summer of 2020 to address advanced economic equity for BIPOC communities in the wake of the uprising surrounding the murders of George Floyd and Brianna Taylor. Two leaders advancing transformative strategies to advance economic justice, ASBN Board Member Anasa Troutman of the Big We Foundation and Historic Clayborn Temple, and Dr. Carmen Rojas, President and CEO of the Marguerite Casey Foundation and Founder of the Workers Lab in a dialogue facilitated by Taj James of Full Spectrum Capital about ways that resource public and private integrated-capital is starting to be returned to the communities that have experienced significant economic divestment and redlining. Capital is being provided to community leaders and entrepreneurs who have been systemically denied access. This conversation explores the transformative outcome on the economy, health, and climate when land and capital are returned to those who have experienced the most significant challenges of the dominant economy, through the lens of the impacts of race, class, and gender on investment, entrepreneurship, and economic development.
Marguerite Casey Foundation is the leading national foundation investing in community organizing and movement building that is building strong and just local economies. And Ms. Troutman through her leadership at The Big We Foundation and the Historic Clayborn Temple is leading a Southern Shift Initiative to advance community wealth buying and economic development led by Black Women to build thriving local economies for all people in the South.
We explore how philanthropy, government, and private investment are going beyond trust-based philanthropy, character-based lending, and ESG investing, in advancing a new model of Deep Impact Investing that focuses integrated capital strategies on both making the existing economy less extractive and more just, and laying the foundation for the new restorative and regenerative economy.
